Short Profile on Denzil Africa

I am currently recording my second album entitled “Woman”. This compilation is dedicated to all women, of all colours and races in our beautiful world! The album is expected to be launched in the near future.
I have toured to several foreign countries as a guest artist for corporate events and have also performed with national and international celebrities in the jazz and contemporary music genres. Some of the musicians I have performed on stage with include Donald Harrison jnr, Kenny and chante Lattimore, Winston Mankunku, Robbie Jansen, Jimmy Dludlu, P.J. Powers, Mafikizolo, Dr. Victor, the late Sipho Gumede, Kurt Darren, Mandoza, 101 and many more.

Previous Achievements

My debut album entitled “Out of Africa” was recorded in 2001 and was launched at The Boardwalk in June of 2002. The album was a huge success with one of the track winning an award at the Algoa FM Sound Search Competition for the “Best Eastern Cape Song”. This is one of many highlights of my career.

  • Studied at MAPP Music Academy and the University of Cape Town
  • Specialized in seven subjects in Jazz Tuition and Secular Music
  • Cape Town Regional 1988 Winner of South Africa’s biggest talent search, “The Shell Road to Fame.”
  • 2001 Algoa FM Talent Search winner for the Best Eastern Cape Song, entitled “Inspire”
  • 2002 Launch of debut album “Out of Africa” at The Boardwalk in Port Elizabeth
  • “Out of Africa” album received rave reviews, many labelling it as “world class.”
  • Performed on stage with the likes of Kurt Darren, Malaika, Mafikizolo, Steve Hofmeyer, Mandoza, Dr.Victor and the Rasta Rebels. P.J. Powers, Mango Grove and many more.
  • Performed live on ETV, Fokus, Jazz Café and was featured in much media coverage
  • One of the Showtime winners for the Best Cabaret Show, “Motown Soul Groove.”
  • Toured to Mauritius
  • Opening act for International Group “ABBA” in Mauritius
  • Opening artist for international singers Kenny and Chanté Lattimore
  • One of the adjudicators for the Eastern Cape’s Pop Idols and K-TV Talent search
  • Eastern Cape’s musical director for one of its biggest radio stations, Metro FM
  • First musical director for Port Elizabeth’s first School of Music at Dower College
  • Performed live as a solo pianist and singer for Pacofs in Bloemfontein
  • Member of SAMRO (South African Music Rights Organisation)
  • Performed with national and international icons including Robbie Jansen, Jimmy Dludlu, Judith Sepuma, Donald Harrison (from New Orleans)
  • Had the lead role in a major musical production of “Grease”
  • Was the preferred choice for presidential and high end corporate functions
  • Recorded second album entitled “Woman”. Several tracks from the album have already been featured on Port Elizabeth station, Bay FM and Algoa FM. The official launch of the album will take place in the near future.

Short profile of the Vusa Band

The Vusa Band accompanies Denzil Africa for selected gigs.

Band achievements:

  • Performed live on the ETV programme, Jazz Café
  • Performed at major festivals throughout South Africa
  • Backing band for several South African jazz icons such as Robbie Jansen, Winston Mankunku, Jimmy Dludlu
  • Performed with international artist form New Orleans, Donald Harrison
  • Recently performed at the Grahamstown Festival All Star Jazz Festival
  • Performed at the Somerset East Biltong Festival together with Mafikizolo, Dr.Victor, Jennifer Jones and many more

The Vusa Band performs a wide range of styles and genres and is experienced in vocal and instrumental interpretations of classic African jazz and circular music.

The band is one of The Boardwalk’s preferred entertainment options and has been recognised as a highly professional ensemble at all of the high end corporate functions and festivals at which it has performed.
