Bands - Rap / Hip Hop

DEFBOYZ is an Eastern Cape based hip-hop activism duo made up of Xolile 'X' Madinda and Mxolisi 'Biz' Bodla. Their signature sound is hardhitting lyricism over hard beats informed by their baptism into the genre in the early 1990s. For Defboyz hip-hop is a channel for expressing self and to comment on society.

Their latest EP, Ubom, contains the much loved tracks 'Ubom' and 'Judas Theory' which can be heard regularly on Umhlobo Wenene FM, Tru FM and Radio Grahamstown. In April 2009 Defboyz was backed by Nia tocreate a thrilling Afro-fusion and spoken word performance to open for the enigmatic Linton Kwesi Johnson in Grahamstown when he toured South Africa.

It was at the age of 17 in 1996 when X, Biz and other friends formed Defboyz because they saw themselves as ‘deaf’ to negative social circumstances. Hustle and toil cut the group down to two core members who have become ambassadors of the Grahamstown hip-hop scene and respected contributors to the genre in South Africa.

Cutting their teeth alongside other hip-hop lovers studying at Rhodes University at the time such as Zubz, who would later take his hip-hop career to Johannesburg, and Mass Dosage, a DJ who hosted the Hip-Hop Headrush, a groundbreaking hip-hop radio show at Rhodes Music Radio.

Using the skills and reputation gained they gained,  from 2000 X and Biz, they shifted their focus to running hip-hop events and workshops for younger ‘hip-hop headz’ in Grahamstown. They also produced and hosted a hip-hop radio show called ‘Food of Life’ on Radio Grahamstown over these years from 2000 to 2004. It attracted a large following of hip-hop fans that used to crowd out the studio every Friday midnight to express themselves over the airwaves.

DEFBOYZ live their activism and social commentary through the youth mobilisation projects Grahamstown. Their focus is on encouraging participatory through dialogues and mobilising for education transformation in South Africa through the SAVE OUR SCHOOLS AND COMMUNITY CAMPAIGN.
