Crafters - Fashion Designers

Designer, Linduxolo Mhlonipheki Sishuba grew up in the Nelson Mandela Bay township of Motherwell. Sishuba’s grandmother taught him how to crochet to keep him out of mischief and to teach him a valuable skill.

“I was always good with my hands,” says Sishuba. “I used to make wire cars and did a lot of repairs around the house. That’s why my grandmother encouraged me to use my creative skills.”

He began by crocheting “Rasta hats” for his friends who then asked him to do some clothing designs. “My first attempts were not great,” laughs Sishuba. “But I started studying the way clothes were made and I gradually became better and better at designing and crocheting outfits. I usually come up with some pattern ideas and then sketch them before I start crocheting.”

Later in life, Sishuba moved to Cape Town where he received various formal and informal training in fashion design and clothing production. He currently has a BA degree in Public Administration, Psychology, English and Sociology. He also has a qualification in Craft Operations Management.

Sishuba can now make a wide range of designs and even makes clothes to order. He has also started a traditional African footwear range of leather sandals. “I’m currently selling from my home in Motherwell, but I am hoping to have my own boutique store one day,” says Sishuba. “There are so many designers in the Eastern Cape with world-class products, we just need a good distribution channel and a way to market our crafts to the rest of the country.”

Not only is Sishuba a talented fashion designer, he also has a passion for music and theatre and has recorded his first single at Rhodes University Studios in Grahamstown.
