Puppetry - Puppetry

(Conducted by Fairy Garden Theatre - Education Through Puppetry)

Classes will be split into two age groups:

7yrs-9yrs & 10yrs–13yrs.

Our aim is to have 12, two hour workshops with one hour towards teaching, and another towards the production.

Children see a performance of our current production before undertaking a 12 week challenge to build their own glove puppets and create a short puppet performance which they will perform for friends and family at the end of the workshop.

In the workshops we will be focusing on the following:

Introducing children to theatre/Introducing children to the production/Children’s abilities:

Getting to know the children, and finding out what each individuals abilities are, and what direction in theatre it is, that they want to move towards

Health and Safety:

Teaching the children more about theatre etiquette, and health and safety rules, that goes along with theatre and performing.

Speech:

Work on the children’s problems with pronunciation, and teach them proper exercises, through games, that will improve and enhance their speech.

Characterisation:

They will each get a character, to work towards at the Show Case that will be performed at the end of the workshops. They will be helped to improve their characters to the fullest of their abilities. Through acting exercises and games, they will be taught more about acting and characterisation.

Improvisation:

Give them different scenarios, and teach them to think on the spot, as improvisation is a vital skill in theatre.

Movement and Rhythm:

Teach children about the different ways the body moves, according to the emotion that goes along with it. The children will also get the opportunity to find out in which area of the body they excel in.

Mime/Physical Theatre:

Help children to learn to think out of the box, and be creative without dialog, and by using certain props, as something that it is not, e.g.: A wooden spoon can be used as a paddle.

Stage Craft:

Children will be assisted to make their own little stage and glove puppet character, out of recyclable materials. Our goal is to teach the children to make use of recyclable materials, and in that way contributing towards saving the planet in their own ways.

Puppet Manipulation:

The children will be given a chance to put all the skills we have taught them into practise, with our guidance

The last three workshops will go towards rehearsals for the fifteen minute Show Case, the children will be showcasing at the end of the workshop.
