Laz Macaza

Popular Eastern Cape hip hop artist, Laz Macaza (born Phindile January) was raised in Grahamstown but later moved to Motherwell township in Port Elizabeth. It is here that is musical career began. Inspired by local hip hop artists, and from what he heard on the radio, he knew that music was his future.

In 2008 he released his first independent hip hop album entitled “Sgub’sasebhayi” which sold over 3,000 copies. The album was well received by the public and helped Laz Macaza make a name for himself in the industry. The album’s hit single is still being aired on radio stations around the country. (Umhlobo Wenene, Y-FM, True FM, KQ FM and Kowie FM.)

According to Laz Macaza, he “has been privileged to share the stage with top hip hop artists including Ringo, HHP, Big Nuzz, DJ Cleo and Zakes Bantwini.” He was also one of the performers chosen for the opening ceremony at the Nelson Mandela Bay stadium during the 2010 FIFA Soccer World Cup.

This talented Eastern Cape artist has also worked with local producers on a number of albums including Deep Minded (Best of Bay) and Linda Mahobese (Fingerman). His collaborative works include projects with international gospel star Thembinkosi, Mara (ackhomntu wamntu fame), Dennis, CJ and DJ Frisko.

The unsigned artist is currently in studio working on his second album entitled “flight ZERO4ONE”, with the recently released single, Bambapha boasting 300 downloads in one week on tweetjamz.com.
