The JOHN EDWARDS TRIO is a Port Elizabeth-based jazz band which features John Edwards on piano, Andrew Warneke on bass guitar and Devon van Rooyen on drums. The musicians are experienced and accomplished jazz performers; their collective musical diversity is reflected in their dynamic and creative interpretations of songs which are representative of the trios’ extensive repertoire of African, American, Latin American and original jazz-inspired compositions. Recent successful performances include the trio’s collaboration with internationally acclaimed jazz vocalist Melanie Scholtz.
John Edwards is a jazz pianist/composer and educator. Originally from Durban, he graduated from the University of Kwazulu-Natal with a Masters in Jazz and lectured at this institution from 2004 whilst pursuing a parallel career as a professional jazz musician. Although his preferred medium is acoustic jazz, his musical versatility has enabled him to perform, compose and record in several musical contexts including rock bands, jazz/classical fusions, dance productions, cabaret and cruise ship engagements. John recently relocated to Port Elizabeth from Grahamstown; in addition to lecturing at NMMU, he is increasingly visible as a jazz performer in and around the Eastern Cape region.
Andrew Warneke is an endorsing artist of Cort basses and Hartke amps. He graduated from NMMU with a B Mus degree in 2006 and has been an active part of the Port Elizabeth music scene for several years. He recorded his first solo album Just the Bassics in 2008. Recent projects include 2che, The Jack Rabbit Slims and his work with the John Edwards Trio. He lectures bass guitar at NMMU.

Devon van Rooyen performed with renowned local jazz band The J-Walkers for several years and has performed in a variety of local musical contexts. A career highlight was his musical participation in the London Notting Hill Carnival. He is a member of the Mandela Bay Symphonic Wind Orchestra and was involved in the Arts & Culture World Cup entertainment programme at the PE Opera House. In addition, Devon teaches percussion and flute at Greenwood Primary School.
