Fundiswa Sylvia Tshazibana is the author of “Intanyongo,” a collection of poetry - which was co-authored by her daughter, Neliswa Tshazibana her daughter and Daniel. Z. Hermans, a local poet. It was published in June 2010 and was officially launched in July 2010 during the Grahamstown National Arts Festival.
She has also written a collection of short stories called "Amabali Amnandi" and a book entitled "Ukhanyo", meaning "light" in isiXhosa.
Fundiswa Sylvia Tshazibana was born on 10 December, 1956 in Uitenhage, in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. Born in the apartheid era, her education and exposure to the arts was limited.
However, Fundiswa’s parents, the late Phosani Jackson Mamkeli and his wife Nomathemba Joyce Mamkeli were adamant that their ten children would have the best education possible. Fundiswa in particular showed a flair for writing and story telling from an early age.
After matriculating from Limekhaya High School in 1977, Fundiswa worked for various companies including the Fine Wools Factory. In 1980, she registered at the then Zwelitsha Training School for J.S.T.C and started teaching Geography in 1982 at Kwazakhele High School. She later moved to join the staff of her old school, Limekhaya.
Whilst teaching she registered at Vista University for her B.A. degree majoring in Xhosa and Education and graduated in 1995. Following graduation, she taught Xhosa and Geography at Tinara High School for 21 years.
Following her retirement, Fundiswa decided to explore her love of writing and story telling and joined the Bhala writers’ guild under the supervision of Professor B.B.Mkonto.
She was also a member of the Ibutho lababhali under the supervision of Doctor Linda Kwatsha Nkukwana and received much encouragement from seasonal writers such as Mr. M. Ngonyama, Mr. P Antony and many others.
Fundiswa continues to pursue her passion for writing and is currently working on her next publication.
