Brent Harker was born in Port Elizabeth in 1971. He started playing acoustic guitar seriously at the age of 18 when he taught himself to play guitar by means of a chord book and some old jazz standards.
The song that inspired him most was Tears in Heaven from Eric Clapton. “Mostly because as a young man I didn’t have access to George Benson and Earl Klugh,” says Harker. “I started playing some public gigs with Michael Barry and Angela Muller of what was then the Vlakkies Blues Band and befriended the late Errol Cuddumbie where we played some private gigs with me playing mostly solo guitar and vocals.”
On tour in South Korea, Harker was inspired to take up the guitar again after a 15 years absence by some Canadian friends after playing Clapton and Sting solo versions at a party in Ulsan City, South Korea.
Harker has played at Fongs Restaurant in Emerald Hill and some concerts at church events as well as playing in the All Saints Church Band mostly as a backing guitarist.
Harker is registered on Reverbnation where he held the number two spot behind Freshly Ground for a while on the national jazz charts with his song, Blood Moon Rising. He wrote the lyrics and composed and arranged the music.
“I still actively write my own songs and haven’t been to single guitar lesson and one music lesson apart from primary school where it was compulsory,” says Harker. “I currently play an Ibanez over a Stagg 60 watt amp courtesy of Alan at Off Beat. I play jazz and jazz fusion in the genre of smooth jazz ballades and beats and some R&B Ballades.”
