NuBox Jazz Band was formed in 2008 by Tozamile Kuze, who was founder of a now defunct group called “WAVES” in 2001.

Tozamile’s dream was realized when the band “NuBox” was established in October 2008. We boast six artists: Siyabonga Somthunzi (Bass Guitarist), Mayibongwe Gwam (First Keyboard), Toni Lungile (Second Keyboard), Sibusiso Dara (the Drums) and Zuzeka Somthunzi, our Lead Singer. Our music ranges from Jazz, Jazz Fusion, and R&B depending on the occasion we perform for. Despite playing cover versions, we also have our own compositions.

The reason for forming this band is mainly to combat crime, as well as trying to lessen unemployment in our communities. Our goal is mainly to enrich people in our communities through music, so that they can become interested in the art and also stay off the streets. We want to showcase our talent in the Eastern Cape and abroad. Port Elizabeth has wonderful creative musicians and artists that can put P.E on the map.

“Our Vision” – we want to make our Metro and Eastern Cape a better place for tourists and entertainment.

1.    Zuzeka Somthunzi (Vocalist)
Zuzeka has been in the musical field for a longtime. She performed with different artists as a backing vocalist and as a freelancer.

2.    Siyabonga Somthunzi (Bass Guitarist)
‘Siya’ is a man with many talents. He writes and composes songs for the band. He wrote songs for other well known artists such as Zodwa and others. Siya is currently studying Theology at Bethel Bible College. He played a crucial role in the formation of NuBox Band.

3.    Mayibongwe Gwam (Pianist – 1st)

This young multi talented man has started singing in primary school, at Tsomo Junior Primary and studied piano and vocals at Cape Town High School. He played with other bands where he was approached by Xolani Faku to play with Coega Jazz Ensemble to represent the Cacadu District Municipality in Hankey, at the launch of Sarah Bartman Centre of Remembrance Architectural Competition brief hosted by the Department of Arts and Culture. He received a certificate in Hospitality Management in 2008. He did a learnership at African Global Skills Academy where he graduated in 2009. He is also a composer.

4.    Sibusiso Dara (Drummer)
‘Sbu’ started music in 1999 as a Bassist in the Gospel group at church at the age of 15yrs (Gospel Connection Group). Ten years later he joined a jazz group as a part time drummer and percussionist. He played with legends such as Sipokazi, Ringo and Caiphus Semenya. He has a diploma in management and currently studying diploma in Music – DLPMUSA)

5.    Lungile Toni (Keyboard Player – Synthesizer)

This soft spoken, gentleman started singing in church at a very early age. When he was 17yrs old, he started playing the piano and in 1995 he formed a gospel group called ‘Mighty Angels ‘. He shared the stage with music legends Benjamin Dube and Nomsa Siyo to name a few. He also participated at the Shell Road to Fame. Lungile is now studying Theology at Bethel Bible College.

We have invited national promoter Mr. Danny Mongo to our rehearsals, whereby he was very impressed and in turn opened doors for us, e.g. organizing to perform with the late Sipho Gumede and the late Stompie Mavi, @ Centenary Hall and Orient Theatre in East London, as WAVES Band then. We shared the stage with Jimmy Dludlu, Don Laka, Jonas Gwangwa and Ringo Madlingozi.  Since then, we never looked back and grew from strength to strength.

Our band has performed in various cities such as George, Plettenberg Bay, Knysna, Mossel Bay and Cape Town where we toured with the late Mr. Mavi. We even performed for SA Cricket Team at Boardwalk in November 2001.  2009, we performed at Summer Festival for Dept. Sport, Rec, Arts & Culture and for the Dept of Health we performed for their Awards function, to name the few. We also performed on the 04th April 2010 for the Nelson Mandela Metro Splash Festival.  We were privileged to be chosen as the only band to take part in the Eastern Cape tour for the legend, Don Laka’s Cd launch, Poison, in April 2010.

NuBox worked on a project where we were the backing band or rhythm section for Sista Flo’s (Lelethu Mahambehlala) DVD Video shooting, where we’ve composed and arranged all of the music except for the lyrics of the poetry and songs. I must say that we felt privileged and honored to work with such a highly respected lady, in launching a very successful event with attendance from very prominent business and highly educated people.

From the management side, I feel blessed to work with such disciplined and talented people, hope and wish the Nelson Mandela Metro and the Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture will help us fulfill our goals and dreams.
