Bands - Steel / Marimba

The Graeme College Steelband was founded in May 1996 by Vivienne Hacksley and Steve Lawrie and proved to be an instant success. Since its inception the band has delighted audiences around South Africa, continuously receiving numerous invitations to perform at public functions.

In the last thirteen years the band has become an integral part of the street vibe of the Grahamstown National Arts Festival and has also given performances at the Kalahari Kuierfees in Upington as well as the Klein Karoo Nasionale Kunstefees in Oudtshoorn.
In 2008 the band took part in a week-long Summer Arts Festival held at Portchester Community School in England.

The Graeme College band has been an inspiration to many other schools in the country and has assisted them in starting their own steelbands. It offers a wonderful opportunity for boys from literally all walks of life and every population group to make music together and to provide entertainment to many, showing living proof of our proudly South African rainbow nation. The band has also released two CD’s entitled “Street Steel” and “Heart of Steel”.
