Ghetto Deep is a music group based in the suburbs of Port Elizabeth which was formed in 1997 by two brothers Gavin and Keath Richenberg. They was then later joined by friends who also have a passion for music.
Ghetto Deep recorded its first two singles in 2008, entitled P.E and Skarrel which gave them great respect and fame in the Eastern Cape. “We used backing tracks from other artists, but we weren’t happy with that because we wanted to be original,” says group member, Gavin Richenberg. “In 2009 we recorded our fifth album which contained our first original tracks.”
Because the group doesn’t have any external funding, they set up a make-shift studio in a living room and taught themselves how to use recording software.
“Through all the things we had accomplished we still had to face a community filled with gangsters, drugs and poverty which is now reflected in our music which also made us a target for gangsters.”
Ghetto Deep covers different genres of music such as Reggae, R&B, Gospel, Kwaito and Hip Hop but focuses on speaking about real life.
“We have a big influence on the youth and try to be responsible so that young and old can listen to our music. One of the biggest obstacles for us is the lack of equipment to do our own shows and to give back to our community but with the help of God things will change. Our dream in life is to make it in the music industry and we hope that someone will reach out to us.”
Ghetto Deep is now rocking the streets of Port Elizabeth with their music and hoping to reach out to the rest of S.A. and work with other local and national artists.
They have performed together with Patrick ‘TURU’ Lindoor on a track he wrote for CEO of FIFA, Mr. Danny Jordaan. They also work with a number of community projects including SOSAC [SAVE OUR SCHOOLS AND COMMUNITY] and SAWETO FOCUS POINT in aid of communities.
“Ghetto Deep is here to claim its spot in the hip hop industry so keep looking out for us and GOD BLESS,” says Richenberg.
The group regularly performs at private and corporate functions.
