Bands - Jazz




Mo Jazz Band is made up of 5 talented musicians. It was formed in 2003 by Siyabonga Mjijwa and Khayalethu Nazo, and now includes Mzwanele Soloman and Siziwe Matititi. The band is managed by Lennodia Petersen.

Although the band’s main focus is live jazz, they are also highly accomplished in a several other genres including Jazz, House, Mbaganga, Gospel, Samba and the Bossa Nova.

Fiks Marwana Fiks Marwana

Fiks started playing music at the age of nine for his church. His talent was recognized and in 1970 he started playing for a band called Heartbreaks.
 

  • In 1975 I played music with Papa Makhene
  • In 1979 I played for the group called Amajita in Port Elizabeth
  • In 1990 I played for the band called Afromusa and we recorded an album calIed Hullo
  • In 1991 I played for the band called Isaphetha we went on tour to Zuric, Poland and Germany and we recorded a CD called Intlonipho
  • In 1993 I formed a group called 4x4 jazz band with a well known Vuyisile Bojana; we performed at a function attended by the South African President Thabo Mbeki.
  • We performed at the ex-President Mandela’s birthday
  • I performed at Thornhill jazz festival
  • I performed at summer jazz festival at springs.
  • I performed at splash festival with a well-known Sipho Gumede, Jimi Dludlu, Sealo Siloto, Brenda Fassie and Sipho Hotsticks Mabuso and I performed at the function which was attended by the ex- mayor, Nceba Faku
  • I have formed my own band called Fiks jazz band
  • I started playing with Mo-Jazz February 201 0 and currently still playing with Mo-Jazz



Khayalethu Nazo

Khayalethu was also born in Port Elizabeth and matriculated at Ndeybo Senior Secondary School. He began playing the keyboard in 1992 and picked up the bass guitar in 2002.

  • I love playing my bass and that is what I do best
  • I had the honor of playing with Bra Sayda, Patla Faku, Thozamile Man, Gelo Celota, Stompie Mavi, Jimmy Dludlu, Faya Faku, Gloria Bosman, Kenny Latimor, Zwai B~ta, Pitch Black Afro, Thandiswa Mzwai and also the great honor to play with the master Mr. Errol Cuddumbey
  • Ihave played at a number of shows including Aids Campaign, Transnet Old Power Station, Grahamstown Jazz Festival, Splash Festival, Imizilwili Choral Festitval, The Makufu Jazz Festival and the Northern Arts and Culture Festival
  • I have also been involved with many other local bands in the past such as Heros of God as keyboard player, Welaz Khabah as bassist, then started Mo Jazz as bassist and currently the music director and rehearsal organizer
  • I am also a vocalist. I wrote four of the songs on our latest album, they are "Pepelo", "Jazz Moods", "Lennodia" and, "Funk.” Our album, "Mr. Baloyi" has been recorded independently without any record company hacking
  • I also teach the New Afro Teens Band and also wrote and composed a song for them

Siyabonga Mjijwa

Another Port Elizabethan, Siyabonga also matriculated at Ndeybo Senior Secondary School. He began playing the drums at age 13 and hasn’t stopped since.

  • I had the honor of playing with Bra Sayda, Patla Faku, Thozamile Mani, Stompie Mavi, Zwai Bala as well as the privilege to play with one of the best musicians Mr. Errol Kadampie
  • I have played at a number of shows like the Aids Champaign, Transnet Old Power Station, Grahamstown Jazz Festival, Splash Festival, Northern Areas Arts and Culture Festival and many more
  • I have played in a number of local bands ego Heros of God as a drummer then formed an Afro/Pop group. My role in this group was producing, beat making, organizing and vocaling, then I the Motherwell Jazz band which is well known as Mo Jazz. I was asked to be band leader and percussionist
  • We, as a band, are teaching the New Afro Teens and it is our dream to teach others as well. I also wrote three songs for our latest CD called "Mr Baloyi". The songs include "Erhangeni" "Long Journey" and "Way Back". The album was recorded independently without any record company backing
