Fifteen young women between the ages of 10 and 17 years make up the “Angels of Dance” group. Hailing from Walmer Township in Port Elizabeth, the group was started by a neighbour, Nomgcobo Matyila as a way to instil passion in the girls and keep them off the streets. They are passionate about groove, house, kwaito and traditional dance.

“I noticed that this group of girls had a passion for dance, but we formalized the group in order to stop them from going to dance at taverns in the township,” says Matyila.

Without any formal training, Angels of Dance reached the Semi Finals in the 2009 SA’s Got Talent Competition. They danced to the vibey, upbeat and typically South African tune, Home Talk, by Mango Groove.

After returning to Port Elizabeth from the glitz and glam of the national stage, Angels of Dance are now organizing shows at the local Walmer township town hall in order to raise funds. They have also performed at the ACVV in Forest Hill and were part of the Fan Fest celebrations at St Georges Park during the 2010 Fifa World Cup.

“We have even performed for President Jacob Zuma when he visited Vista University in 2010,” says Matyila. “Right now, we dream of finding a good place to practice the dances, as we don’t have anywhere to practice except in township homes. We also want to show the other children in the community that dance is good. It gives you a passion and hope and takes you off the streets.”
